Our Curriculum

Haworth-1064

Our curriculum is based around discrete, timetabled lessons that cover the entirety of the National Curriculum. It drives educational excellence, curiosity and character development. We use our unique location and superb, well-developed outdoor space (including a pond, fire-pit and night-line) to drive hands-on, experiential and outdoor learning. All of our learning promotes basic skills to ensure children are ready for the next step in their lives.

Intent

At Haworth, we have designed a knowledge-rich, hands-on curriculum that meets the academic, personal and social needs of our pupils, whilst adhering to the requirements of the National Curriculum (2014). It ensures clear progression in both knowledge and skills for each subject across school and develops critical thinkers who, through regularly revisiting previously taught knowledge and skills, are able to apply their learning both fluently and flexibly.

We believe learning is for life, not just school. Our curriculum acts as both a mirror to themselves and a window to the world beyond their lives. Our ‘Haworth Heroes’ are interwoven throughout the curriculum, celebrating diversity and developing our children into resilient, respectful and well-educated citizens, who are ready to make positive contributions to society.

Implementation

At Haworth, our curriculum is brought to life through high-quality, engaging teaching that reflects our belief in learning as a lifelong journey. We implement a knowledge-rich, hands-on curriculum through carefully structured sequences of learning that promote depth, progression, and connection across subjects and year groups. All teaching is underpinned by the expectations of the National Curriculum (2014), while also embracing the distinctive identity and values of our school.

We adopt a collaborative, enquiry-led approach to learning. Pupils are encouraged to work together, reason aloud, and challenge one another’s thinking, fostering curiosity, independence and resilience. Lessons are rich in vocabulary and oracy, ensuring that all children develop the language needed to access, express and deepen their understanding across the curriculum.

Our curriculum is deliberately designed to build knowledge and skills progressively, with clearly mapped learning journeys in each subject. Prior knowledge is revisited regularly to secure retention and support pupils in making meaningful connections. Critical thinking is developed through problem-solving, reasoning and reflection, ensuring children are not only fluent in what they know, but confident in how they apply it.

We believe that learning must be purposeful, engaging and memorable. Practical, hands-on experiences are central to our teaching, making learning tangible and real. We make use of both indoor and outdoor environments to maximise engagement and deepen understanding. Our unique local context — rich in history, heritage and natural beauty — is embedded across our curriculum, enabling pupils to explore their identity and develop a sense of place within the wider world.

To ensure the highest outcomes for all learners, formative and summative assessments are used effectively to inform planning and address misconceptions. Teachers carry out summative assessments in Week 2 and Week 6 of each half term, providing timely insights into pupil progress and enabling rapid, targeted support where needed.

Our curriculum implementation ensures that all children at Haworth become confident, articulate and knowledgeable learners who are ready to contribute positively to their communities and beyond.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is evident in the knowledge, skills, and personal attributes our pupils acquire during their time at Haworth. Through our knowledge-rich, hands-on approach, children develop secure understanding across subjects, enabling them to retain and apply what they’ve learned with increasing independence, fluency, and flexibility.

Pupils are able to articulate their learning confidently, using subject-specific vocabulary with accuracy and purpose. Their ability to make connections across the curriculum demonstrates deep conceptual understanding, supported by regular opportunities to revisit and embed key knowledge and skills. Over time, children develop as critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and effective communicators.

Our focus on collaborative learning and enquiry leads to high levels of pupil engagement and motivation. Children learn to work respectfully with others, listen actively, and challenge ideas thoughtfully — skills that are consistently observed across lessons, pupil voice, and outcomes.

Assessment information, gathered at Weeks 2 and 6 of each half term, shows clear progression in knowledge and skills across all year groups. Gaps in understanding are identified and addressed quickly, ensuring that all learners — including those with additional needs — make strong progress from their starting points.

The use of our local environment, practical experiences, and outdoor learning opportunities makes learning meaningful and memorable. Pupils show pride in their work, curiosity about the world, and a strong sense of identity. Our curriculum provides not only academic success but nurtures resilient, respectful and responsible individuals — our ‘Haworth Heroes’ — who are ready to contribute positively to their communities.

By the time pupils leave Haworth, they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education. They possess the knowledge, character and confidence to succeed in an ever-changing world — truly reflecting our belief that learning is for life, not just for school.
