Little Wandle

The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters.
There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about
supporting their reading at home.
Guided Reading
From Year 2 - 6, children will enjoy a whole class guided reading session daily for 30 minutes.
Children will practice their reading fluency and stamina, as well as learn a variety of strategies
to predict, retrieve, sequence, infer, summarise and understand vocabulary in context.
A variety of texts are used to engage and spark the imagination of our children.
Take a look at our Reading Policy to see how Guided Reading is taught at Haworth Primary School.
Reading for Pleasure
At Haworth Primary we prioritise spending time reading for pleasure in our classrooms.
During Free Read Friday, children have the opportunity to choose the books they wish to read and enjoy.
They can choose to share a book with a peer, choose to read topic books related to the wider curriculum or
listen to an adult in the classroom reading aloud. Additionally, all classes have a class novel and adults regularly
read aloud to the children to further promote the love of reading.
Reading Suitcase
To promote reading at home, every week our children have the opportunity to take home their class reading suitcase. Every reading suitcase is different and includes a range of newly released books for our children to enjoy at home with a hot chocolate and sweet treat. Our suitcases are updated termly, allowing every class to enjoy the texts before they find their home in the school library. Some of our recent suitcase themes include Diversity and Acceptance, Women who Changed the World and Our Planet.
